We militarized (GI'd) the beautiful club fixtures and floors by scrubbing and polishing them. Our shoes and brass insignia were shined at least twice every day. Our bunk beds had to be made so tightly that a dropped quarter must bounce at least a foot above them. Demerits (Gigs) were liberally passed out for minor infractions. Major infractions could lead to "wash out" of the cadet program.

He was the American camp work officer. Marcus Worde helped keep my memory straight on details of our Kempei and Omori imprisonment. Scott Downing and his wife, Bitsy, were helpful with suggestions for the book and data on the prisoners who were in the horsestalls.
