We can also agree with Bourdieu, however, that within many (but not all) functionally differentiated subsystems, there are struggles between the agents for the improvement of their respective positions and that in society as a whole there are processes of distinction based on the agents’ unequal possessions of, or access to, economic, social and cultural capital. So, while segmentary, hierarchical and functional differentiation on the one hand are leading principles of differentiation that have developed in some form of evolutionary succession, on the other hand, when looking at present societies, one finds empirical evidence for the coexistence of all three principles at the same time.
