I was the only one who didn't have overshoes and my feet, which had not been dry for four days, were starting to itch and burn and felt swollen. The pillbox was full of steam from our wet clothes, cigarette smoke, and fumes from the stove we used to heat our rations.

Treff and I were assigned to be the scouts but he stayed with the Company CP because his appendix was bothering him. * We had a K ration for breakfast and moved out at 0600, a column in single file on each side of the road.
