I’m staying safe at home. My child is about to risk his life to protect me. I am powerless to help him. He is the man now and I’m the frightened child. By the summer of 2004, as the five years of John’s service began to wind down, I had come to understand my own achievements (real or imagined) in an altogether new light. Every loving father wants to have a child surpass him, do better than he has. I had always thought of this in material or career terms. Now I realized that it had happened in moral and character terms.
So did the people I met after I put a Marines bumper sticker on my car. I found that I’d stumbled into a brotherhood by proxy, that people with tears of pride in their eyes, total strangers, would tell me about a son or daughter in the military. 24 ✯ AWOL I found that leaders in my community, men from another generation, when serving our country was a normal rite of passage, came up to me and congratulated me for having a son in the military. They would sometimes tell me their life stories; tell me something they had never mentioned before about fighting on Okinawa, or at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea, or about coming home to a spiteful reception after fighting in Vietnam, or about the friend they lost in Beirut.
