Pall Mall Gazette el eight de septiembre de 1888 en referencia al segundo asesinato de Jack el Destripador. los angeles novela de Stevenson El extraño caso del healthcare professional Jekyll y el señor Hyde se había publicado dos años antes, en 1886, y se prestaba ya a esta clase de comparaciones. Había entrado de lleno en el imaginario renowned y aún hoy, en el siglo XXI, no somos inmunes a su efecto. El caso «esclavizaba» ya l. a. «imaginación» del abogado Utterson, a quien le fue dada los angeles terrible experiencia de ser testigo de l. a. historia; podemos decir que también esclaviza l. a. de sus lectores. Construido como una investigación detectivesca, con una forma narrativa diáfana y perfecta, este «relato alegórico que finge ser policial», según diría Borges, es sin duda una de las piezas maestras de su autor.
Esta edición presenta el texto en una nueva traducción de Catalina Martínez Muñoz, con las ilustraciones de Mervyn Peake para l. a. edición de The Folio Society de 1948. Incluye asimismo un memorable artículo de Stevenson sobre l. a. inspiración de los angeles obra y un revelador apéndice de Robert Mighall que los angeles sitúa en el contexto científico, psiquiátrico y criminológico de l. a. época.
