Dropping-off time is a useful opportunity to communicate with the parent and gather any information that they may be willing to pass on; for example, is the child excited about a special event happening later in the day? Has the child had a bad night or refused to eat breakfast? If you feel that all staff need to know about something the parents have passed on, make a note on the staff notice board (do, however, bear in mind that the notice board, while not intended for open access, is also not completely confidential).

If a child does appear to need direction, step in and give some support. It is, however, important to avoid pushing the child to ‘do’ something.
